Naples to host Rome Diamond League in 2020

The southern Italian city of Naples will host the fifth Wanda Diamond League meeting of 2020 as the Pietro Mennea Golden Gala moves out of Rome for only the fourth time in its history this summer.

The Wanda Diamond League and the meeting organisers can officially confirm that Naples' San Paolo stadium will host the 2020 Pietro Mennea Golden Gala on Thursday, May 28.

Traditionally held at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, the Golden Gala has this year opted to move out of the Italian capital this year while the stadium undergoes renovation work ahead of the Euro 2020 football championships.

With a capacity of 55,000, the San Paolo stadium is among the largest and most recognisable sporting arenas in Italy. It was recently renovated to host the 2019 Summer Universiade, with the addition of a brand new, blue running track.

It is most famous as the home of iconic Italian football SSC Napoli, and hosted a FIFA World Cup semi-final in 1990 as well as preliminary round games at the Rome Olympic Games in 1960.

This is only the fourth time in its 40-year history that the Golden Gala will take place away from the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. The meeting was held in Verona in 1988, in Pescara in 1989 and in Bologna in 1990.

This year's event will be the fifth of 14 meetings on the Road to Z├╝rich, and will host ten Diamond Disciplines including the men's 100m, the men's 3000m, the women's pole vault and the women's 1500m.
